I spent the day working in the garden; I ate ice lollies, smothered my neon white legs in sun cream and watched in bewilderment as Marlene continually rolled around in the dirt, turning her white fur brown. Summer is here, which means it’s time for some new feet.
It’s hard to find a decent pair of sandals that offer you support. They tend to consist of a hard, flatter-than-flat sole with thin strips of leather attached. Not only are they flimsy.
That’s why I love Birkenstocks. Their chunky souls are much better for walking in and the cork footbed moulds to the shape of your feet for comfort. Some say they’re ugly. I refute this claim. Crocs are ugly. Birkenstocks aren’t exactly pretty but you can definitely make them look good. Don’t believe me? See the evidence below.
I bought a pair of single strap Birkenstocks two years ago and they were a godsend. They hurt like hell at first but then I did walk for 40 minutes in them (they ripped my skin to shreds). Once worn-in, however, they were the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.
Last year, I bought some flat-soled, tie-around-the-ankle sandals from ASOS. And guess what? They broke. So this year I am updating my ever-reliable Birkenstocks. I like these ones – double strapped with a multi-coloured snakeskin effect finish.
